Maldives
All shades of blue imaginable can be experienced in a tourist
destination as unique and exclusive as the Maldives, with
more than of the islands’ area being covered by water. Its
double line of natural atolls spreads over kilometers
from north to south and kilometers from east to west,
forming a group of islands whose number remains a mystery.
In the middle of the Indian Ocean, just below India and Sri
Lanka, the visitor can play at being a real Robinson Crusoe
among the idyllic landscapes, where the news does not reach
and where you can walk barefoot all day long. ere is no
better way to disconnect from the world.

he term paradisiacal is not a metaphor for the count-
less resorts that occupy the entire extension of any giv-
en island. ey might seem like a movie set in which
no detail is missing: the vegetation surrounding villas and
palatos, the lagoons of transparent waters, the beaches of
white sand, the sun bathing the entire area for eight hours
a day, the bikes, and buggies to reach the restaurant and the
wellness center, the indescribable feeling of peace, security...
But then you discover that you can touch, smell, and feel eve-
rything, and it is all real.
An experience not to be missed is going fishing on a
dhoni, the quintessential Maldivian boat, whose shape is
reminiscent of Phoenician ships. In addition to transport-
ing tourists, local shermen oer to go out into the sea in
the afternoons, equipped with rudimentary shing lines to
organize fun competitions. With a bit of luck, you always
catch a bite that will end up cooked and served on a table
at the beach.
Another of the great attractions is the network of routes
operated by seaplanes, especially those run by the com-
pany Trans Maldivian Airways, the oldest in the country,
which has around aircraft, usually at the service of hotels.
Visitors enjoy the experience like children, with the abrupt
movements of the seaplanes, especially when landing, and
the infernal noise of the engines. Wow, so this is what ying is
all about, and not all that stu with jet engines! From the low
altitude reached by the seaplanes, the islands can be seen in
all their splendor, with their whimsical shapes captured over
an innite blue canvas.
e Maldives also boasts exceptional seabeds. As some
people know, the beauty of this country lies above and below
sea level. e term ‘atoll’ is derived from the local language
Dhivehi. ese formations, so characteristic of the Maldives,
are created in warm waters above an extinct volcano by the
accumulation of corals that form ring islands and enclose a
shallow lagoon.
In addition to the colors of this ecosystem, there is also a
truly amazing marine fauna. Diving opens a world of pos-
sibilities, including seeing the whale shark, considered to be
the largest sh in the world and endemic to these waters.
ere is no danger: this shark only feeds on plankton. Along-
side them, it is easy to see manta rays, dolphins, and sh of
all colors and sizes imaginable. And, of course, there are also
over species of coral.

turístico tan singular y exclusivo como Maldivas, formado
por agua en más de un . Su doble línea de atolones
naturales repartidos en kilómetros de norte a sur y
de este a oeste forma un conjunto de islas cuyo número sigue
siendo un misterio. En medio del océano Índico, justo debajo
de la India y de Sri Lanka, el visitante puede jugar a ser un
verdadero Robinson Crusoe entre paisajes idílicos a donde
no llegan las noticias y lo suyo es andar descalzo todo el día.
Qué mejor desconexión.
D
onde el término paradisiaco no es una metáfora es en
los innumerables resorts que ocupan toda la extensión
de una isla determinada. Podría parecer un decorado
en el que no falta ningún detalle: la vegetación rodeando vi-
llas y palatos, las lagunas de aguas transparentes, las playas
de arena blanquísima, el sol bañando todo el escenario du-
rante ocho horas al día, las bicis y los buggies para despla-
zarse al restaurante o al centro de wellness, la indescriptible
sensación de paz, de seguridad… Pero resulta que no, que
uno toca, huele, siente y todo es real.
Una experiencia que no hay que perderse es salir a pescar
en un dhoni, el barco maldivo por excelencia, cuya forma re-
cuerda a las naves fenicias. Además de transportar a turistas,
se ofrecen para salir a media tarde provistos de rudimenta-
rios sedales con los que organizar divertidas competiciones.
Con un poco de suerte, siempre pica alguno que acaba coci-
nado y servido en una mesa sobre la playa.
Otro de los grandes encantos es la red de rutas opera-
das por hidroaviones, sobre todo los de la compañía Trans
Maldivian Airways, la más antigua del país, que cuenta con
medio centenar de aparatos, normalmente al servicio de los
hoteles. Los que vienen de fuera disfrutan como niños de la
experiencia, con los bruscos movimientos, especialmente en
el amerizaje, y el infernal ruido de los motores. ¡Guau, esto sí
que es volar y no lo que hacen los reactores! Desde la poca al-
tura que alcanzan, las islas se muestran en todo su esplendor,
con sus caprichosas formas plasmadas en un lienzo innito
y azul.
Maldivas cuenta además con unos fondos marinos ex-
cepcionales. Como recuerdan algunos, la belleza del país
está por encima y por debajo del nivel del mar. Con razón,
el término atolón procede del divehi, el idioma local. Estas
formaciones tan características de Maldivas se generan en
aguas cálidas sobre un volcán extinto por la acumulación de
corales que forman islas anulares y que encierran una laguna
poco profunda.
Al colorido de este ecosistema hay que añadir el de una
fauna marina que resulta verdaderamente asombrosa. El
buceo abre aquí todo un mundo de posibilidades, entre
ellas la de contemplar al tiburón ballena, considerado el
pez más grande del mundo, endémico de estas aguas. No
hay peligro: solo se alimenta de plancton. Junto a ellos es
fácil ver rayas a manta, delnes y peces de todos los colores
y tamaños que se puedan imaginar. Y, cómo no, más de
especies de coral.
